How to Transform Your Bathroom into a Luxurious Spa

There are quite a few things only a good spa moment can give you. Whether you’ve encountered a rejection letter, a forgotten umbrella, canceled plans, or a broken zipper (to name a few)—soak long enough in a relaxing bath or lie on the slats of a steaming sauna. And there you have it: the mind will clear, the heart rate will calm down, and voila, you’ll feel like you’ve been reborn!

That’s exactly why you need a luxurious spa—right within the vicinity of your home. And with the right bathroom upgrades, that’s easily achievable! Keep reading to learn how to transform your bathroom into a luxurious spa as a part of your next home remodel.

Declutter and Organize the Bathroom

A cluttered bathroom is definitely not relaxing. So before you add anything new, spare time to thoroughly deep clean the space. Cleaning the tiles is basic, but if the need arises, you may also want to refresh the grout. This makes your bathroom as good as new.

As you place the items back in place after deep cleaning, you want to make sure you’re keeping only what you need and getting rid of everything else. For the items you do use, consider investing in storage baskets (natural materials for the win, like wicker and rattan baskets).

Use Natural Elements

Being in nature promotes calmness—and while showering in a forest sounds a little unreasonable, bringing the forest to your bathroom can actually be a great idea. Use natural materials, like a stone sink and a wooden vanity. And, of course, when we say nature, we mean plants. Plenty of them. These should be varieties that thrive in the bathroom, like English Ivy and Kangaroo Fern. But if you have a brown thumb, faux plants will serve the purpose as well. Another one of our favorite plants is eucalyptus; see more below.

Add Fresh Eucalyptus

When we say spa-like energy, hanging fresh eucalyptus is a must! It has this soothing smell that will make you feel like you’re relaxing somewhere nice and luxe (even if you’re just jumping in for a quick shower before a busy day). Alternatively, you can diffuse eucalyptus oil in the shower. No matter which approach you use, you’re in for a calming experience, as eucalyptus is widely believed to reduce stress levels.

Consider a Rainfall Showerhead

Speaking of nature… we’re probably not alone in finding something relaxing about a carefree day spent soaking in the rain with loved ones, followed by warm cups of cocoa. How about something similar in your bathroom (read: spa)? Install a rain shower head for a luxurious rain-like experience. You can also consider an aromatherapy diffuser showerhead that releases essential oils with the water flow 😉

Use Open Shelving

Spa-like bathrooms are nice and organized, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re devoid of accessories. Display your storage baskets, hand towels, and everyday skincare on open shelving. This allows them to double as decor. In fact, utilizing vertical wall space with shelving is a great way to increase storage in small bathrooms.

Consider the Japandi Design Style

Japandi design blends the minimalism of Japanese aesthetics with the cozy warmth of the Scandi-style. And, as a Las Vegas interior designer, I often get requests for this style in bathroom interiors.

The Japandi approach emphasizes clean lines, neutral tones—such as soft whites, beiges, or muted greys—and natural materials like wood and stone. In a Japandi bathroom, less is more; think uncluttered surfaces, functional storage, and handcrafted details that add character. The end result? A tranquil retreat that feels just like a spa!

Say Yes to a Freestanding Tub

If you have the floor space, invest in a freestanding bathtub (and don’t forget the bathtub caddy!). For the ultimate spa-like experience, place the tub near a window for natural light. If that’s not possible, surround it with plants and candles. A good rule of thumb is to allow at least one foot of space between the bathtub and the walls/vanity.

Bonus points for adding a Japanese soaking tub (ofuro). This offers an immersive soak—but is smaller in footprint.

Consider a Heated Floor

Stepping out of the tub onto a cold floor can really put off the relaxing vibe. For the ultimate luxurious experience, you’ll love stepping on a surface with underfloor heating. Pair this with heated towel racks to make sure your towels are warm and soft, perfect for post-bath relaxation. We can take care of all of that—and more—when you partner with us for your bathroom design.

Add Zen Lighting

Lighting can completely change the mood of your bathroom. For a spa-like feel, you want to be able to dim the lights for a soothing mood. Install soft, dimmable LED lights, so you can control the brightness levels of the space when soaking in the tub. Speaking of brightness, you want to use easy-to-wind blinds for the windows, so you can open them up during the day for a nice and bright daytime ambiance.

Create a Soaking Salt and Bath Bomb Bar

This one’s for the ultimate luxury seekers. Dedicate a small counter to a soaking salt and bath bomb bar, where you display jars of bath salts, oils, and artisanal bath bombs. These set the whole relaxed vibe in the bathroom.

Double the Vanity

Why one when you can add two? A double vanity—with two sinks and two mirrors—can add a little extra glam to your luxurious spa. The double mirror can make the space look expansive. Plus, if you and your partner share the same bathroom, two vanities will give you a bit of room to spread out as you get ready.

Include Cutting-Edge Technology

A luxurious bathroom should also be convenient. Fortunately, the latest tech provides so many options:

  • App-controlled showers allow you to pre-set water temperature, flow rate, and even start your shower remotely. Example: Kohler Konnect
  • Smart mirrors double as a digital assistant. They actually let you check the weather, traffic updates, or even your calendar while getting ready. Some also feature LED lighting that adjusts based on the natural light in the room. Example: HiMirror
  • High-tech self-cleaning toilets (sure doesn’t get any better, does it?) use UV light sterilization and electrolyzed water to automatically clean the bowl after each use. Example: TOTO
  • Digital faucets allow you to control water temperature. Some can even track water usage to help with conservation! Example: Dornbracht
